The life of a silver mine in the 16th century, according to Heinrich Groff
Heinrich Groff created a series of drawings around 1530 that show the work of Renaissance miners, their tools and the transformation of lead and silver extraceted from the mine. The mine pictured is that of Croix-aux-mines in the Vosges mountains, owned by Duke Antoine of Lorraine. These quill-drawn images, in black ink and emphasized by watercolor, are that much more precious since 15th and 16th century mining iconography is relatively limited.
The collection is preserved in the library of the Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux Arts (National Superior School of Fine Arts) in Paris
