Carpenters and carpentry [Print 4]
The lumberjacks brought, not far from the village of Croix-aux-mines (whose belltoweer is still recognizable today), the logs. The carpenter-miners prepare rails, planks, and shoring (*) designated for tunnel. The tools used are the axe and the saw (zoom 1). In the lower left the head miner supervises the operations, holding a toise(*). Children collect (zoom 2) the woods scraps to heat the village homes.
shoring - a piece of wood used to hold up the ceiling of the mine.
toise - an old measure of length commonly used at the time (about 6 feet).
