In those days, miners had to regulations to follow. Upon hire each miner - recognizable on the picture by their leather apron, worn behind - pledge obedience to the regulations by raising his right hand (zoom 1) before the Judge of the Mines, reprentative of the Duke in charge of the development of the mine. An extract of the code, glued to a small board, designed to be attached to a nail, is held by the Judge as he reads it out to the miners. Outside, other miners wait their turn (zoom 2).
