Terry HUIZING
1938 - Cincinnati, Ohio

Terry Huizing, born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a lifelong collector of minerals. His collection specializes in calcite worldwide; minerals of the Midwestern United States; and several sub-collections that focus on aesthetic pseudomorphs; minerals from the Second Sovietskiy mine, Dal’negorsk, Russia; and twinned and manganoan calcite. The collection numbers approximately 1,000 carefully selected specimens ranging from miniature to cabinet size. In addition to those specimens personally collected in the field or individually purchased, the Huizing collection also includes important acquisitions from the Joe Kielbaso and Bert Ottens calcite collections.

Huizing is a chemical engineer (now retired), and for the past 25 years has been Curator of Mineralogy at the Cincinnati Museum Center and a consulting editor for Rocks & Minerals magazine. Previously he was active in the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies, serving as president in 1975. The American Federation Scholarship Foundation honored Huizing in 1991 for " Distinguished Achievement in the Field of Earth Sciences." He most recently co-edited, with Dr. R. Peter Richards, the extraLapis English volume on Calcite, authoring a number of the articles.

In the 1980s his friend and colleague, Dr. Wendell Wilson, provided personal instructions as to the then-unpublished techniques of mineral photography, including advice about cameras, lens, film, and lighting. Following this, Huizing began his own attempts at mineral photography using specimens from his personal collection and from the collection of friends with similar collecting interests. He created his own style by backlighting a translucent material to produce white-to-gray and colored backgrounds. This style was subsequently influenced by the work of friend and professional photographer Jeff Scovil to include strategically placed colored background highlights. As an amateur photographer, Huizing continues to utilize 35-mm film format to illustrate specimens he collects for slide presentations and for magazine articles. Photographs of specimens from the Huizing collection have appeared in the Munich Show catalog, Lapis, extraLapis English, Mineralogical Record, and Rocks & Minerals.
