Werner LIEBER

Born 1925 in Karlsruhe, Baden (West-Germany), where he attended elementary as well as secondary schools (gymnasium) and finished in spring 1943 with the Abitur examination. After that, 2 ½ years with the Navy until 1945.

In summer 1946, Lieber began studying chemistry and mineralogy at the Technical University Karlsruhe, became Diplom-Chemist and finished with the promotion (dissertation) as doctor of natural sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) in 1955. He then was employed with HeidelbergCement in their Central Laboratory and later as head and chief chemist in the research & information center of this company.

Mineral collector since 1947. Member of the German collector's association "Vereinigung der Freunde der Mineralogie und Geologie, VFMG" since its foundation in 1950. Member of the Deutsche Mineralogische Gesellschaft (German Mineralogical Sciety) since 1952, of the friends of Mineralogy (USA) since 1971 and of the Deutsche Gemmologische Gesellschaft since 1979.

1952-1956 he was member of the Advisory Board and 1956-1971 member of Board of directors VFMG, hereof 9 ½ years president of the Association. 1957-1961 editor of the association's periodical DER AUFSCHLUSS.

1956 he founded the first collectors district group at Heidelberg whose director he was for 17 years until 1973. He initiated the first German mineral show in spring 1964. When he handed over all these positions to his successors, he altogether had served 21 years with and for the Association. In appreciation of this work, Dr. Lieber became their Honorary Member in 1983.

1976 and the following 25 years he worked as member of the Advisory Board with the mineralogical magazine LAPIS, where he published more than 50 articles. Also, he published several books, among them "Der Mineraliensammler" with 7 editions (1963-1978), "Kristalle unter der Lupe" (Crystals under the lens) 1972, "Canyons, Kupfer und Kakten" (1987), "Calcit" ( a monography, 1990) and "Amethyst" (a monography, 1994). Besides, he published more than 120 articles between 1950 and 2001 in several magazines, among them DER AUFSCHLUSS, Rock& Minerals, KOSMOS, Mineralogical Record, LAPIS.

Many travels brought him to famous mineral locations in Europe, Africa, Russia, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Australia, North-, Middle- and South-America. W. Lieber counts to the most wellknown mineral photographers. Numerous pictures have been published in articles, as cover photos, in books and calendars.

1995 he dedicated his valuable mineral collection to the Mineralogical Department of the University Karlsruhe, where it is on exhibition.
