Dominik SCHLÄFLI
|
Dominik Schläfli was born in 1975. He spent his childhood in various countries, and started collecting minerals in 1982, shortly before leaving Zaïre (now the DR of Congo). Later on, a few visits to the Lengenbach and the Clara mine revealed the existence of the beautiful world of small minerals. He convinced his parents that a microscope would be the ideal gift for his 18th birthday. Soon afterwards he went to Lausanne, Switzerland, to study microengineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and obtained his diploma in 1998. Currently, he designs electronic circuits for a telecom company.
He began photographing minerals from his collection in 2001. From the very beginning, he directed his efforts exclusively at photomicrography. His guiding principles are:
- Find a nice balance between form (volume, texture) and substance (color, transparency, luster).
- Avoid colored backgrounds.
Some of his photographs can be seen in the online database mindat.org.
His favorite minerals are garnets, cuprite and vesuvianite. His new favorite collecting area is the ophiolite zone between Saas-Fee and Zermatt, Switzerland. |
