Bruce CAIRNCROSS

Biography: Born in South Africa in 1953. Married to Theresa and we have one daughter, Charna. Presently an Associate Professor of Geology at the Rand Afrikaans University, Johannesburg.

Education: B.Sc (Hons) (1977) and M.Sc. in geology (1979) from the University of Natal. Ph.D. (1986) from the University of the Witwatersrand, specialising in clastic sedimentology and coal.

Minerals: I started collecting minerals when I worked as a student in Namibia in 1975. This interest has subsequently grown into a collection numbering over 4,000-catalogued specimens and various publications dealing with southern African minerals. I have an increasing interest in documenting and publicising southern Africa's mineralogical and geological heritage.

Mineral-related Publications: 35 refereed journal articles, 13 congress abstracts, and 43 popular styled articles. 4 books, including "The Minerals of South Africa", "The Manganese Adventure", "The Desmond Sacco Collection" and "A Field Guide to Gemstones of Southern Africa".

Hobbies: Guitar playing, squash, golf, photography.
