Desmond SACCO I was born in Johannesburg and have lived here most of my life. My father was Guido Sacco, an Italian mining engineer who came out to South Africa in 1926 and who played a pivotal role in the discovery and development of the Kalahari manganese fields. It was due to this geological and mining background at an early age, that I developed an interest in geology and minerals. I have for a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and a BSc Honours from UNISA. It was as a student, during the early 1960s, that I began seriously collecting minerals. During 1964, I worked as a geology student at the Beeshoek mine close to Postmasburg in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Later, during 1967-1968, after graduating and gaining employment with the Associated Ore & Metal Corporation Limited, I worked as a field geologist in southern Zimbabwe and the northern areas of South Africa.
My mineral collection has been assembled over 40 years, and focuses primarily on southern African minerals, although classic non-African localities are also featured. There are about 3,400 specimens in the collection, most cabinet sized and larger. Minerals from Tsumeb form the core of the collection, with about two-thirds of the total collection from this one mine. Thereafter, the Kalahari manganese field follows and several other southern African countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, DRC and Morocco.
