Allan YOUNG

Allan R. Young was born in Wisconsin in 1950, and began collecting minerals while in High School. An interest in geology and mathematics led to a degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville in 1972. Following graduation, he headed west to begin a career as a Mining Engineer at one of the most prolific specimen producing localities in the United States; the Idarado mine near Ouray, Colorado. As frequently happens, a full realization of just how fortunate he was to spend seven years at this remarkable place did not come until many years after the mine closed in 1978.

Throughout his career, Mr. Young has built or managed mines in Colorado, Idaho, and Nevada, and has directed mining operations in Utah and California as well. Prior to taking his current position with the Bureau of Land Management, he was Vice-President of Development for a U.S. mining company, where he managed projects in Peru and in Argentina. He is a Registered Professional Mining Engineer, and presently resides in Boise, Idaho.

Mr. Young began collecting thumbnail minerals in about 1983 and continues to focus on only that size category. At the 2005 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, he was awarded the Desautels trophy for his case of thumbnails, in addition to the Lidstrom trophy for the second year in a row. His collection currently numbers about 1,000 specimens of worldwide minerals, with an emphasis on silver-bearing and Idaho minerals. He is an avid field collector, particularly in Nevada and Idaho. A relative newcomer to digital mineral photography, he began photographing portions of his collection in mid-2005, and continues to work on improving his techniques.
